The Mr Men and Little Miss Team in Boston
Inspired by their experience at the 1896 Olympic Games, several members of the Boston Athletic Association founded their own marathon in 1897. The race has been run every year since and it is now the world’s oldest marathon. Both the start and the finish have been moved over the years, but much of the course remains exactly as it was originally designed.
In 2007, CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA was thrilled to field our first ever Mr Men and Little Miss Team in the Boston Marathon with our team always easy to spot in our trademark Mr Happy and Mr Tickle running vests, only made possible by the generous support we received from Chorion Rights Limited. Starting in Hopkinton, the course winds its way past many of the area’s most famous landmarks before finishing in Boston on historic Boylston Street in the heart of the city’s downtown area.
Every runner is a star in our eyes and deserving of our deepest gratitude. The motivation and determination required for preparation and training, with runners pounding the streets in often wet and cold conditions is awe-inspiring. Whilst completing 26.2 miles is a huge personal achievement, many runners also let us know that collecting sponsorship monies is almost more demanding. For this, we also like to thank and include runners’ families and friends whose kind sponsorship and encouragement is so important; this support and commitment is so deeply appreciated and vital in raising much needed funds for our fight against the biggest childhood cancer.
We are so grateful for the opportunity, so proud of all our runners and so thrilled with everything that is achieved through the Virgin London Marathon.
